[Chinese Proverb] 情人眼里出西施

Just not too long ago, someone taught me this proverb, "情人眼里出西施". The pinyin for this proverb is "Qíng rén yǎn lǐ chū xī shī". The literal translation of this would be "Xi Shi appears in the vision of the lover". Xi Shi is one of the 4 famous great beauties of ancient China. However, all four beauties are actually from different dynasties. Chronological order of the 4 famous great beauties of ancient China is listed in the table below.

NameDynasty
Xi ShiSeventh to sixth century BC, Spring and Autumn Period
Wang ZhaojunFirst century BC, Western Han Dynasty
DiaochanThird century, Late Eastern Han/Three Kingdoms period
Yang Guifei719–756, Tang Dynasty

I will not go down too deep details on the 4 beauties. For more information, that can come next time, or you may click on their names to view the wiki about them.

The Chinese proverb means, in the eyes of the lover (in this case, a guy), the girl that he loves would be as beautiful as Xi Shi regardless of how the girl may appear to others.
